With more than 2000 books available on the subject
of camping and "RV-ing", choosing one or two can
be a daunting task. I read through the synopsis of
over 1200, and picked what I thought was the best
100 or so worth looking through. I listed books
that were in print and still available as of Spring
of 2004. If there is a book you'd like to recommend
or review; please email us
at bookreview@carlyrv.com
we'd love to hear from you.
I have organized the books somewhat by sub-subject
to make them easier to browse through. You will
find that many of the books (if you click the link)
have detailed information and even sample pages,
to help you decide if the book is right for you.
And, in the interest in saving money, some titles,
can even be purchased used.
From time to time, Amazon offers special
sales and discounts. Currently, several of the items
are available with free shipping, when you cart purchases
totals $25.00 in items, and most of the titles are offered
at a discounted price.
Index of Links and Table of Contents for our pages of Books for Sale from Amazon.com.
We have a HUGE selection of over 100 different New and Used Books
for sale about all kinds of camping. The titles cover what I call, "basic rough" to "easy".
(That means from: backpacking in and making your own tent from a tarp;
all the way to Camping by Car, Van, Tent, Camper, Travel Trailer or RV.)
The books pages are divided into smaller, hopefully faster loading pages, by subject.
We have a page about camping that has books about where
to find the FREE and nearly
Free Campgrounds & many 'HOW TO' Camping Books
that includes general camping guides and titles perfect for someone new to camping,
as well as Don Wright's Guides to FREE Campgrounds.
For the Novice as well as the Experienced Campers' who want to
keep up with the latest, we have a page of many of the
Woodall's Camping Directories,
another page of Area and State Specific Camping & Guide books
and a page of that includes many of the great
"Foghorn Outdoors" titles and Frommer Guides.
.... and for you Campers Who Hate RVs & Concrete Slabs, we have a selection
of: "The Best in Tent Camping"
series with most editions by Johnny Molloy
Even though all the links above include some good FAMILY CAMPING books,
we also have a page with a few titles devoted just to books
about Camping with Kids.
Do you have other family members to consider? like pets?
Most dogs LOVE to travel! We always take our dog Carly camping with us!
And we've been thinking about how our 2 cats might handle RV life,
so .... We have a large selection (over 30 books)
about Traveling with Pets and
a separate page of even more books about Pet Travel.
The State, City or Region Specific: Pet Travel books
are useful not only for the traveler but for pet owners moving to a new state
who want to know where the "pet-friendly" areas are.
No matter where you go,
and who you take, even if you are camping alone, you have to EAT!
and that means COOKING! Even if you are camping in a luxury RV;
you will be without at least some of the conveniences of your kitchen
at home.
For the most of us, our kitchen will most likely be: outside on a camp-stove or grill,
and/or a miniature version in a camper, 5th wheel or travel trailer.
Click the next link to see a selection
of Cookbooks for Camping and RV living that
contain not only recipe books for the road, but basic and advanced camp cooking techniques and tips.
If SPACE and MONEY were no object, I would like to own almost
every title on my CarlyRV "RV books for sale" pages. I would buy them
to keep in my library, because I love books, especially 'how to'
books. Many of the titles would be great to read in between camping
trips or for the arm chair traveler.
If you are a full-time RV-er, or living in your RV for even part of the year, then SPACE
is a major consideration. If you love travel and 'how to' books the way that I do,
I would suggest getting a library card for each of the areas that you frequently travel. A collection of
library cards takes up very little valuable space and the local library is a nice retreat
for any rainy days you might encounter. Then buy only
the few books that you really need.
As for the yearly camping guides and
campground directories, I would wait to buy them for
my particular area of interest for the year I would need them.
Otherwise, it's like owning phone books for cities and states
that I will never call.
I have read and used the yearly guides in the past,
I especially like Woodall's, very comprehensive Directories, although
I have not seen many of the newer editions. Year's ago, Woodall's would issue only
two guides to cover the USA campgrounds, and they were the size of huge phone books.
Some guides, like Woodall's, have rating systems, to let you know, not only where
the campgrounds are, but the many details about the campgrounds as well.
The Woodall's guides ARE very useful, especially if you do a lot of traveling from
place to place. The directories have maps, directions, grids, charts, icons with codes and
sometimes a paragraph or two about the campground amenities and 'Woodall's Rating'; so you can find just
what you are looking for in a camp ground. You will know exactly what the camp ground
can offer you, where it is, when it's open, who to contact, how many miles from your present location, and what it will cost to stay there, and even what you will find in the neighboring area.
I can also personally recommend several titles if you are interested in saving money.
I own and frequently use the following titles by Don Wright: SEE AMERICA FREE, and
the "Don Wright's Guide to Free Campgrounds", Eastern and Western Edition. The pages
are thin, like a phone book, but that just makes for less weight in the camper!
If you are interested in those titles, they are well worth the money. If Amazon does
not have these titles available when you are shopping, please
email rvbooksales@carlyrv.com and I will
see if my supplier has them in stock, as they sell out frequently.
I can also personally recommend "Camping With the Corps of Engineers" by S. L. Hinkle
for more really cheap OR free camping spots, that are usually unknown to the general
public, or overlooked. It's a small book with a list of free to nearly free camping areas for
every state in the US, although some are without the usual facilities of a 'campground' per se.
We would like to help you save time and money shopping, so that you may spend it,
camping and traveling. If you have any questions, suggestions, or submissions,
please email them to CarlyRV
Sincerely, CarlyRV
