PACKING LIGHT ARTICLE ~ tips for packing your galley!
I've learned from experience (read: the hard way) to pack
'light', especially when it comes to liquid refreshments.
Stock up on light weight powdered and
concentrated drink mixes to mix in
reusable, washable containers. Diet drink
mixes and those little kool-aid package
save the most space, even if you also pack
a sugar substitute. If you pack juice and
sodas in cans or worse, bottles, you are
paying extra gas money to transport heavy
containers of mostly water, and they take
up a lot of valuable space in your
miniature living quarters.
If you have some 'soda-pop' addicts in your
family, like mine, just put as many sodas
as are absolutely necessary for the drive,
in your car or truck cab cooler. If you
must have 'the real thing' while camping,
buy sodas just before or AFTER you reach
your destination. All your popular brands
are available almost everywhere there are
highways. Just because you can stock up at
home when sodas are on sale is NOT really
going to save you money when transporting
them to your destination cuts your gas
mileage down by another 1 or 2 miles per
gallon.
We have had great fun shopping in 'new'
grocery stores at our destinations. We make
a date of it, and have met some interesting
local people. And don't forget that there
are Walmarts are just about EVERYWHERE as
well. If you are traveling some distance
and will be stopping overnight at a walmart
supercenter parking lot, it makes sense to
stop in their stores. You get to stretch
your legs in the air-conditioned store and
pick up say a 6-pack of sodas for the next
leg of your trip and maybe a fresh quart of
milk for the super and breakfast you are
going to cook in your RV while parked
there.
For our fellow coffee drinkers, we do pack
some ground coffee to use in our stove top
percolator and our miniature electric drip
coffee maker when we are 'plugged in' at a
camp ground. We also pack a small container
of instant to use in our little 12-volt
coffee maker that we keep in the truck cab.
We use powdered creamers in our coffee, but
reconstituted creamer is also good for
recipes where a little milk is called for.
We also take a few small cans of evaporated
milk as well as cardboard containers of
shelf life milk. The best space and weight
saver by far, is powdered milk. I buy it in
pre measured serving size 1-quart packages
that I keep 'on board' in a air-tight
plastic container. To get rid of that
chalky taste, mix about 3 hours in advance
and refrigerate. And if you prefer a fresher taste, mix
half and half with an equal amount of fresh
milk that you buy along the way.
